Once perceived as a sole domain of men, mid-life crisis is an event that profoundly impacts women. Baby boom women, now in their 40s and 50s, often find themselves deeply immersed in a process of soul-searching. They question the nonstop juggling act they perform each day between children, spouses, home management, aging parents and running the corporate treadmill. According to The Breaking Point by Sue Shellenbarger (New York: Henry Holt, 2004) a common thread exists for women facing major issues at mid-life in that, "in all cases, midlife crisis brings traits, needs or desires that have been ignored or repressed roaring back on center stage in one's personality." Sometimes the crisis is sparked by an event at work. It can be triggered by a health challenge. A marriage in trouble or divorce often plays a role. Or it can begin with a simple glance in the mirror one morning that begs the question, 'who am I and why am I doing what I do?'"
Frequently, women who work through major issues that surface at mid-life achieve extraordinary personal goals such as changing careers, starting businesses of their own, writing the books of which they always dreamed, earning advanced degrees or certification in fields that interest them the most, or simply demanding - and receiving - the time they need to renew themselves. Ultimately, mid-life can initiate a journey about a woman discovering her authentic self, and taking the necessary steps that enable her to fully embrace her sense of authenticity. The results can be meaningful beyond description.
Regardless of the catalyst, female mid-life crisis can be a conduit for tremendous, positive growth...or it can lead to disaster. The keys to a successful outcome involve a woman's willingness to reach out for help first, and her willingness to explore both the positive and negative potentials behind the crisis.
